NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore pitcher Ally Power took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Sunday as the Bulls split their two games at the Spartan Classic. The Bulls defeated Hartford 7-0 before falling in the final game to Norfolk State, 4-2.
Power allowed just one hit as she struck out nine batters in a dominating performance against Hartford. Buffalo opened with two runs in the top of the first as freshman Jessica Goldyn and senior Essence Savinon both drove in runs. In the second inning, Power helped her own cause with her first career home run as she hit a two-run shot to center field, giving the Bulls a 4-0 advantage.
UB added one more in the third inning and Savinon drove in another run in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0. Buffalo recorded another run in the top of the sixth and Power continued to hold the Hawks hitless into the seventh and final inning. She got the first Hartford batter to fly out before a one-out single to left field ended the no-hit bid. She got the final two batters to fly out to complete the shutout.
Power picked up her first win of the season as she allowed just one hit and struck out nine Hartford batters. The Bulls had 10 hits led by junior Leandra Jew, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Goldyn, Savinon, and Power each had two hits in the win.
In the second game, UB fell 4-2 to Norfolk State despite outhitting the Spartans, 12-5. The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first on an unearned run. The Bulls tied it up in the top of the second as Power singled to center field, scoring junior Danielle Lallos.
Norfolk State scored single runs in the bottom of the second, third, and fourth to take a 4-1 lead before the Bulls added one more in the top of the sixth. Lallos doubled to right field and then she came in to score on a single by freshman Karlie Fernandez.
Senior Bobbi Langlois picked up the loss coming on in relief and pitching two innings after Power got the start and allowed one unearned run. Sophomore Brieanna Baker pitched the final three innings as she allowed just one hit and struck out four.
Four different UB players had two-hit games including Goldyn, Savinon, Fernandez, and Power.
“I’m very proud of our offensive production,” said head coach Trena Peel. “We had 22 hits for the day. Ally was lights out in game one with nine strikeouts. She set the tone for us defensively and offensively with her home run. Game two was a tough loss because we outhit them 12-5, but we left too many runners on and had a few costly base running mistakes. I think that was the difference in our game. I like the growth and chemistry that our team had this weekend.”
The Bulls will head to Colorado State next weekend for the Colorado State Classic. UB will begin the weekend against Idaho State.
