NORFOLK, Va. – The Purple Eagles baseball team completed a series sweep over Norfolk State on Sunday, defeating the Spartans, 6-1.

Niagara got on the board quickly; Kirwer scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning to give NU the early 1-0 lead. The Purple Eagles kept the Spartans scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Norfolk State tied up the score, 1-1. In the top of the sixth, Greg Cullen singled to left field, sending home Gallup. Philippe Langlois singled through the right side, sending home Kirwer and Trevor McCauley doubled down the right field line, scoring Cullen to give Niagara a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Gallup tripled to left center, scoring Joel Brophy and Nick Bernick to cement Niagara’s 6-1 victory and the series sweep of the Spartans.

Kirwer and Gallup led Niagara with two runs each and Gallup also had a team-high two RBIs.
McCauley and Kirwer each had one double and Gallup recorded his first triple of the season.
On the mound, freshman Matthew Brash (1-0) earned his first collegiate win. Brash struck out seven batters and allowed only three hits in 5.0 innings pitched.

The Purple Eagles will compete in the University of Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. Friday through March 5.
