The Canisius men’s soccer returns to the road on Saturday, as the team travels to New Rochelle, New York to meet the Iona Gaels. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Canisius is 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in MAAC play after falling at home to Marist on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite numerous offensive chances throughout the game, Canisius fell to Marist by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex. Marist scored in the game’s third minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Blue and Gold answered in the 14th minute after junior Mo Kretschmer drilled home his first career goal, off an assist from teammate Mathew Santos. The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the 82nd minute when Marist scored the game-winner. Canisius ended the contest with a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Bryce Tramuta came on in relief of starter Marco Trivellato and made six saves in 57:50 of action.

The Griffs’ defensive efforts have been strong this season, with the team allowing just 10 goals in the first 12 contests of the year. Dating back to last season, the Canisius defense has held its opponents to two-or fewer goals in 21 consecutive outings.

The schools are meeting for the 29th time with Iona holding an 18-7-3 all-time advantage. Last season, Iona earned a 1-0 win in double-overtime at the Demske Sports Complex. In 2014, Canisius ended a nine-game regular-season losing streak to the Gaels and a six-game run overall with a 2-0 victory at Iona.

Iona has lost its last three conference games and now owns a 2-10-0 overall record and a 1-3-0 record in MAAC play. Daniel Huertas leads the Gaels with 11 points this season. His five goals scored are the most for the team. Kellar Sirstins has seen the majority of time in goal for the Gaels this season. He has a record of 1-7-1 in eight games played. Fellow goalkeeper Juan Alcantara has started three of the team’s last four contests in net for Iona.
