UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) will wrap up their season-opening four match road swing this weekend as they head to Ithaca on Friday night to take on the Cornell Big Red and Albany to take on the Albany Retrievers on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls will take on Cornell at 7:00 pm on Friday night on ESPN+ before wrapping up the weekend at Albany on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
The Bulls are coming off of their opening week in which they went 1-1 with a loss at St. John’s and a win on the road against Youngstown State. UB was handed a 3-1 season opening loss at St. John’s as Kaitlyn Walsh netted the lone goal for the Bulls.
On Friday, a shorthanded UB squad was able to net three second half goals en route to a strong 3-0 road victory over the Penguins as Gurjeena Jandu, Gianna Yurchak and Kaitlyn Walsh potted goals for the Bulls. Senior captain Carissima Cutrona had a strong match for the Bulls as she notched two assists while Marcy Barberic and Tess Ford also picked up an assist in the win.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Kelly had an impressive match against Youngstown State on Friday night as she was able to record a career-high eight saves in her first career clean sheet.
The Cornell Big Red are 1-0-0 on the season as they were able to claim an overtime victory over St. Bonaventure on Friday night in Olean, NY. The Big Red got a second half tally from Naomi Jaffe before Kaili Gregory potted the game-winning goal in the 100th minute to lift the visitors to the 2-1 victory. In goal, Meghan Kennedy made three saves for Cornell as they started the season off with a win.
After starting the season off with back-to-back wins, the Albany Great Danes have dropped two straight and own a 2-2 record on the year. The Great Danes opened the season with a 1-0 road victory over the Arizona Wildcats before taking down New Mexico State 3-1. Albany had a tough weekend last weekend as they were handed a 5-0 loss by Boston College and a 2-0 defeat by Colgate.
Mariah Williams leads the Great Danes with two goals and 13 shots while Claire Stackel is having a nice start to her season as she has notched a goal and an assist for Albany. In goal, Andrea Leitner has started all four matches and owns a 2-2 record with a 2.00 goals/against average while making 18 stops on the year.
After this weekend’s matches, UB will return home for their first home match of the 2018 season on Thursday, September 6 at 7:00 pm as they welcome the Canisius Golden Griffins to UB Stadium.
