CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — A penalty kick goal in the 28th minute proved to be the difference as the Canisius women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Siena Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
The contest signals the end of the regular season for both squads. The Golden Griffins finish the 2018 season with a 4-8-5 overall record and a 1-5-4 ledger in the MAAC. The Saints, meanwhile, improved to 9-7-3 on the season and 6-2-2 in conference play as they wait to learn their seed for the upcoming MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship.
In the games’ 28th minute, Siena sophomore Rachel Sullivan booted a penalty kick over Canisius junior goalkeeperAlana Rossi’s head and into the left corner of the net. The lone goal of the contest was her first of the season.
The Griffs had a chance for an equalizer in the 49th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after the Saints were called for a handball in the box. Siena keeper Taylor Dorado kept Canisius off the scoreboard, however, turning aside junior Madeline Beaulieu‘s attempt with a diving save.
Rossi was credited with eleven saves in the loss while Dorado recorded three saves for the Saints to earn her eighth victory of the campaign. The Saints out-shot the Griffs, 17-9, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Todd Clark‘s Postgame Comments
“Obviously it was a difficult match in terms of this being the last result of the season. I feel for our seniors who have worked hard over the years and in my opinion, deserved more out of their senior year. Unfortunately, this is how the year has gone. There have been some really high moments, and there have been some low moments. It stinks to end with a low moment, but unfortunately, that’s how it ends for most of us.”
Game Notes
• With Wednesday’s loss, Siena moves to 19-10-1 against Canisius in the all-time series.
