Alice Nannette “Nan” DiNardo was born February 3, 1934, in Binghamton, NY to Alice (O’Brien) Steen and Roy S. Steen.  She passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on September 21, 2023 in Lewiston, NY.  She was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 62 years, Eugene “Gene” Anthony DiNardo, who passed away on August 14, 2018 in Lewiston, NY, who welcomed her with the Lord to her eternal resting place in Heaven above.  Also preceding her in death was her mother, her father, her stepmother (Eleanor Stearns Steen), her sister, Clarita (Steen) Kennedy, and her sister, Mary Jane (Steen) Frazier.

She is survived by her three children:  Michael E. DiNardo (Lewiston, NY) and his wife, Marlene; Karen Alice (DiNardo) Waugaman (Lewiston, NY) and her husband, Jack; and Mark Anthony DiNardo (Lexington, KY), and his wife Karla. She is also survived by ten grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Nana”:  Anastasja Ketch (Bill), Victoria Waugaman (Benjamin Shirback), Alek Waugaman (Courtney), Amelia Waugaman, Nicholas DiNardo (Brooke Zarcone), Anthony Morton, Gracie DiNardo, Luke DiNardo, Logan DiNardo, and Max DiNardo, as well as one great-grandchild, Jackson Ketch.  Nan is also survived by her siblings, Thomas Steen (Jane), Nora Clifford (James), and Alan Steen, and her brother-in-law, Samuel “Sonny” DiNardo. She is also survived by an amazing family spanning the United States, who affectionately referred to her as Aunt Nan.  She will be missed here on Earth by everyone, including her family, her friends and neighbors, her best friends from bridge club, and fellow parishioners at St. Peter’s in Lewiston, NY. And finally, she is survived by her devoted feline companion, her cat, Henry Golden Boy.

Nan grew up in Binghamton, NY and moved to Camp Hill, PA, and then to Greenwich, CT.  She graduated from Greenwich High School in 1952, and attended Bay Path Junior College in Bay Path, MA.  She married her sweetheart, Gene, whom she met on a blind date while he was in the U.S. Army. She worked as a secretary at Al Katz Insurance for years, and welcomed her three children, Mike, Karen, and Mark, who promoted her to favorite role as “Mom”.  She then worked for many years assisting those with developmental challenges at Lewiston Porter South Elementary, where her time and talent benefitted many children within the school system.  The grace and patience she possessed impacted the lives of all those around her, including the students she taught in a nurturing and caring environment.

Nan was a devout Catholic, attending Mass regularly, and volunteering in a variety of roles throughout her decades as a Parishioner at St. Peter’s, always helping those in need.  Her hobbies included gardening, watching birds and wildlife, cooking (famously known for her amazing sauce recipe), reading, playing bridge, watching The Hallmark Channel and sports (her favorites, Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees), and traveling.  Her travels took her to nearly every National Park in the United States, on an Alaskan cruise, across Canada by rail, and international travels including Ireland and multiple trips to Italy.  Her greatest hobby of all was spending time with her family—her children and grandchildren, who always felt Nana’s love, and she expressed it perfectly by ending every conversation and call by saying, “Love you more”.

The family would like to express appreciation to those caregivers who assisted her in living independently in her own home, until her final days.  Traci Quembi, Gillian Cantey, Iaisha Matthews, and Natalie Erway.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24 from 3 – 7 PM at M.J. While Nan’s spirit is undoubtedly with Our Father in Heaven, with her husband, Gene, and with those who preceded her in death, her final resting place will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY with her beloved husband.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to Catholic Charites of Western New York.  Visit mjcoluccifuneral.com for online condolences.
