UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS

MADISON, W.I. — The University at Buffalo wrestling team opened the 2018-19 campaign at 21st-ranked Wisconsin on Thursday night and had a strong showing before falling to the Badgers, 25-12.
“It was a great night of wrestling,” head coach John Stutzman said. “We are not far off. We competed hard. It’s just the beginning and we will get better.”
After Wisconsin won by fall in the opening match to take a 6-0 lead, the Bulls battled back to tie the dual at 6-6 with consecutive wins by Derek Spann at 133 and Bryan Lantry at 141.
Spann, seeing his first dual action in two seasons after redshirting last year, won a 7-4 decision over Jens Lantz. Spann trailed 4-2 after the first period, but wouldn’t allow another point the rest of the way. A reversal in the second and a takedown in the third period helped him win.
Lantry, wrestling at 141 for the first time in his career, earned a 7-3 decision over Tristan Moran. The Bulls’ senior had two takedowns and earned a riding-time point in the match.
After Jason Estevez dropped a close decision at 149, Alex Smythe tied the dual again with a dominant 13-7 decision over 15th-ranked Alexander Wick at 157. The senior, who redshirted last season, had five takedowns in the match.
A veteran Wisconsin squad won the next three weight classes over a young UB trio to take a 22-9 lead in the dual.
At 197, Sam Schuyler had a strong showing in his dual debut with the Bulls. The redshirt-freshman won a 12-6 decision over Brady Wetter. Schuyler had three third-period takedowns to pull away for the win.
The Bulls will next compete at the Bucknell Duals on November 11.
