BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo State Athletics Hall of Famer Dr. Carolyn A. Lehr passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Athens, Ga. at the age of 77.
Regarded as the pioneer of women’s athletics at Buffalo State, Lehr served as an administrator and coach at the college from 1965 through 1978.
She coached the women’s basketball team during her entire tenure at Buffalo State, leading the team to a .530 winning percentage during that span. She also coached field hockey for her final six years at the college. In addition, Lehr served as the Associate Athletics Director from 1975 until 1978 before joining the University of Georgia’s Athletics Department.
Lehr also helped put Buffalo State on the map, representing the college on numerous committees at the local, regional and national levels. In addition to serving as the president of the New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NYSAIAW), she also occupied positions in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW), and with the Women’s Varsity Sports Organization of New York Colleges (WVSONYC).
Lehr made a generous financial contribution to Buffalo State Athletics in 2005 that made possible the creation of the Carolyn A. Lehr Student-Athlete Academic Center which opened in the Fall of 2005. The facility supports the Intercollegiate Athletics Department’s continuing effort to give its student-athletes the necessary tools to achieve success in the classroom as well as on their venue of play. Lehr’s contributions have also supported a number of other facility enhancements within the department of athletics.
Lehr is survived by her niece Deborah Lehr Trivedi (Dhrupad), grandnephew Nishaad, grandniece Aria, and cousin Ron Meyers (Hester) of Athens, G.A. and Buffalo, N.Y.
