The Canisius women’s soccer team returns to action Oct. 10 when it hosts longtime rival Niagara in a 7 p.m. contest at the Demske Sports Complex. The contest, part of the “Battle of the Bridge” series between the two schools, will air live on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
• Fairfield’s Alex Madden scored twice in the game’s second half to lift the host Stags to a 4-0 victory over Canisius Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn.
• The Stags out-shot the Blue and Gold, 19-5, and led the Griffs in shots on goal, 8-4.
• Canisius junior goalkeeper Alana Rossi was credited with four saves for the Blue and Gold before being replaced by sophomore Bailey Fenwick-Miller in the 78th minute.
• Fairfield keeper Aytana Muschajew made four stops en route to the shutout victory for the Stags.
ABOUT THE PURPLE EAGLES
• Niagara is 7-5-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in MAAC play. The Purple Eagles dropped their last MAAC contest to Manhattan, 1-0, in overtime at home on October 6th.
• Freshman Annie Ibey leads the Hawks with six goals.
• Niagara has gotten 41 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Locas through the first thirteen games of the season.
• Niagara has out-shot opponents, 212-171, this season.
CANISIUS – NIAGARA SERIES HISTORY
• Wednesday’s match will be the 48th all-time meeting between the Griffs and the Purple Eagles.
• Niagara leads the series, 25-19-3.
• Last season, the teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first round of the MAAC Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Purple Eagles advanced to the MAAC Championship quarterfinal round after posting a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks.
• Last year, Canisius posted a 1-0 regular season victory over Niagara on October 4th in Lewiston, N.Y.
• By holding Niagara scoreless for 110 minutes last year, Canisius extended its shutout streak against the Purple Eagles to 290 minutes, covering the last three games played in the series.
