BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Buffalo State extended its winning streak to five games with a 5-3 victory over host Brockport in today’s opener, but dropped the late game 9-8 despite erasing and early 5-1 deficit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) belted a two-run home run in the first inning to give Buffalo State an early lead.
  • The Golden Eagles answered with a run in the second and added two more in the third to take a 3-2 advantage. 
  • Buffalo State evened the score with an RBI double by Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) in the fifth, before Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) doubled in a pair of runs later in the inning and the Bengals held on for the win.
  • Szymkowiak was the only Bengal with multiple hits, going 2 for 3.
  • Four of the Bengals’ six hits for the game came in the fifth inning.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) scattered seven hits and allowed just two earned runs in the complete game win.

 
FOR THE FOES

  • Morgan Flamholtz led Brockport, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) led six Bengals with multiple hits in the late game, going 3 for 4.
  • Blujus was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
  • Cassie O’Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo), Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) and Kaelee Lynch(Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) also had two hits apiece.
  • Szymkowak had an RBI single in the top of the first, but Brockport answered with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the opening frame to take a commanding lead. 
  • Buffalo State tightened up its defense and went to work at the plate to climb back in the game.  The Bengals scored one run in the second and cut the deficit to one on a two-run double by Silva in the sixth.
  • Blujus led off the seventh inning with a home run to even the score and Buffalo State pulled ahead 8-5 after a two-run double by O’Hern and an RBI single by Lynch.
  • Brockport capitalized on a walk and a pair of Bengal errors in the bottom of the inning to set the table, and then scored a pair of runs on a one-out double and then won the game on a walk-off two-out, two-run single.
  • Hayes lasted just two-thirds of an inning in her second start of the day, allowing six hits and five runs.
  • Nicole Adams pitched well the rest of the way in relief, allowing six hits and four unearned runs in the seventh.

 
FOR THE FOES

  • Lindsay Wachna hit a three-run home run, and Kacie Hubbard was 4 for 4 including hitting the game-winning single in the seventh inning.

 
NOTEWORTHY

  • Buffalo State’s magic number to clinch a playoff berth in two with four games remaining.
