CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

BUFFALO — Sophomore David Hanes from the golf team has been named the Canisius Student-Athlete of the Week. Hanes, who holds a 3.42 grade point average as a business economics major, finished tied for 27th last weekend as the Canisius golf team opened the spring portion of its 2018 schedule at the FAU Spring Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Elma, N.Y., native carded scores of 73-73-70 in three rounds at the FAU Spring Championship for a 54-hole score of 216. That 216, which was even par at the Osprey Point Golf Club, is the lowest 54-hole score of Hanes’ career. He has been the Golden Griffins’ top individual performer in 11 of the 12 tournaments he has played in.

The Canisius athletic department has a strong tradition of success in the classroom, with 19 varsity programs recording a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the 2017-18 fall semester. Fourteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school’s 330 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.245 in the fall session.

Additionally, last fall saw a record 27 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Those 27 student-athletes represent 12 different teams. A total of 227 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 70 percent of the College’s student-athlete population. Additionally, a total of 52 Canisius student-athletes were named to their respective sport’s MAAC All-Academic Team last fall, which is 70 percent of the student-athletes eligible for the honor.

The golf team will return to action April 14-15 when Canisius takes part in the Navy Spring Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
