BUFFALO, N.Y. — Junior Cierra Dillard put on a clinic this past week at the NCAA Tournament as she was able to average 29.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals while shooting 49.1% from the floor and 37.5% from three point range while leading Buffalo to their first ever Sweet 16 appearance against the defending national champions. Dillard opened up the NCAA Tournament with a 36-point explosion, highest scoring total of any player in the tournament, as the Bulls downed South Florida 102-79. She finished the game going 11-for-18 from the floor and 7-for-13 from deep to go along with six rebounds. Dillard once again led the Bulls in scoring in their second round victory over #3 Florida State as she finished the game with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals across 39 minutes of work. The junior didn’t shy away from the defending national champions #2 South Carolina in the Sweet 16 as she netted a game-high 29 points to go along with six assists and six steals but the Bulls were defeated 79-63 to end their miraculous run. Dillard capped her amazing first season in a Buffalo jersey averaging a team-best 16.2 points, 5.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 3.0 steals while connecting on a team-best 85 three pointers.
Mitch Moore won the 400IH in 53.41, a MAC Auto Qualifying Time. In the short sprints, Ray Anikwue has a strong day placing 2nd in the 200m in a personal best time of 22.38. Our middle distance men had strong showing, with Leon Atkins placing 3rd in the 800m with a personal best time of 1:52.64, and in the 1500m, freshman Chris Nowak led for the Bulls, placing 5th in a personal best time of 3:55.28. The first school record of the season came in the men’s 3000m with Caleb Covell in a time of 8:21.35 placing 2nd. The men also had a 3-4 finish in the 3kSC with John McCarthy and Matt Mercer. In the field events, the throws were the dominating force. Devon Patterson and Ryan Cribbin went 1-2 in the Shot put, both with MAC Auto Qualifying Marks (58’4.75” and 57’5.5” respectively). Sophomore Sam Wray took 2nd in the Discus in 166’9”.
