CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

Former Canisius golfer Andrew Romano earned a berth into the 2017 Porter Cup after he fired a one-under par score of 69 to tie for medalist honors at the annual Porter Cup qualifying event. The 2017 Porter Cup qualifier wrapped up Tuesday morning at Niagara Falls Country Club after Monday’s action was halted due to rain.

Romano will join with current Canisius golfer David Hanes in the field at the 59th annual Porter Cup, which is set to run from July 19-22 at Niagara Falls Country Club. Romano, who was ranked third in last year’s Buffalo District Golf Association rankings, tied for the top spot with Nicholas Rencis from Rochester. Hanes, a native of Elma, N.Y., earned his spot in this year’s Porter Cup field after he scored medalist honors at the 2016 Little Three Championship last September.

The Porter Cup, considered as one of the top amateur golf tournaments in the world, boasts an amazing list of former players, including Ben Crenshaw, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Tiger Woods.
