BUFFALO — St. Bonaventure senior outfielder Desiree Gonzalez hit a solo homer in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and the visiting Bonnies scored four times in the sixth en route to an 8-2 win over Canisius Wednesday afternoon in non-league softball action at the Demske Sports Complex. The win, which snapped the Bonnies’ nine-game losing streak, improved the team to 11-33 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 18-29 with the loss.

St. Bonaventure starter Josie Borysevicz went the distance and fanned eight in the win for the Bonnies. She improved to 6-11 on the season with the victory. Canisius starter Madi Weathers took the loss in the circle after she allowed three runs on seven hits to go with a walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Weathers is now 6-9 this season.

Canisius trailed 2-0 after St. Bonaventure scored twice in the top of the first, but the Blue and Gold knotted the game at 2-2 in the home-half of the fourth thanks to RBI-hits by freshmen Sydney Kreimann and Gianna Degaltini. With two outs in the frame, Kreimann drove a pitch into left that allowed sophomore Lauren Castro to score from second. Moments later, Degaltini drilled a double off the fence in left center that pushed Kreimann across the plate.

Gonzalez gave St. Bonaventure the lead for good in the fifth when she ripped a one-out home run over the fence in right center to put the Bonnies up 3-2. St. Bonaventure tacked on four runs in the sixth, all of which were unearned, after a pair of Canisius defensive errors. The Bonnies then scored one more time in the seventh to score the 8-2 victory.

Canisius had six hits in the loss, with Deglatini collecting two of those base-knocks for the home team. Senior Lindsey Silfer had a hit, as did freshman Sue Vi.

Canisius will return to action at home on Saturday, when the team plays host to MAAC rival Marist. The league doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
