NIAGARA FALLS — The Purple Eagles were defeated by crosstown rival Canisius, 8-0, in a non-conference matchup at Sal Maglie Stadium, site of the 2017 MAAC Baseball Championships, on Wednesday.

Through the first five innings of the game, the Purple Eagles and the Golden Griffins remained scoreless, with both teams exhibiting strong pitching and playing tight defense. In the top of the sixth, Canisius got on the board, taking a 1-0 lead over Niagara. Four runs from the Griffs in the top of the seventh extended their lead and three more runs in the top of the eighth secured the shutout victory for the Golden Griffins.

The Purple Eagles host Fairfield, the defending MAAC champions, for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
