HAMMOND, La. – The University at Buffalo softball team was swept by Texas-Arlington and Alcorn State on day two at the Lion Classic II, hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. UB fell 12-3 against Texas-Arlington and Alcorn State.
In game one, the Bulls trailed Texas-Arlington 5-0 in the fourth inning until, senior Savanna Norcio reached base on a throwing error by the short stop. An RBI single from sophomore Catrell Robertson knocked in Norcio to put the Bulls on the board.
It wasn’t until the seventh inning that the Bulls scored a few more runs trying to close the gap from Texas-Arlington’s 12-1 lead. Freshman Gabby Keller came on as a pinch hitter and started things off with a double to right center field. Sophomore Leandra Jew doubled down the left field line, moving Keller to third. Keller crossed the plate after an RBI ground out to short stop from sophomore Alyssa Cuevas. With the Bulls down to their last out Norcio was up to bat and she hit an RBI single up the middle allowing Jew to score. Unfortunately the Bulls were unable to rally and fell to Texas-Arlington 12-3.
Sophomore Brianna Baker recorded the loss after 5.2 innings as she gave up nine hits and allowed eight runs. Taylor Light made her first appearance of the weekend, finishing the game for 1.1 innings. Light allowed three hits and four runs in her appearance.
In the second game, the Bulls saw a solid performance from sophomore Ally Power, who lasted five innings, as she allowed five hits and two runs.
Alcorn State scored first after a bases loaded walk to Montana Holyfield sent Sametria Collins home. It remained a 1-0 ball game until the bottom of the seconds when senior Ashton Earnhardt hit a lead-off home run to tie the ball game. That was Earnhardt’s second career home run and the first for the Bulls in 2017.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth Alcorn State lead 4-1, but that did not stop the Bulls. Lead-off batter Ufuoma Ogagan bunted to reach first base safely. With Norcio at the plate, Ogagan steals second then advances to third on the throw from the catcher and home on a fielding error by the center fielder. The Bulls capitalized on this momentum with a Norcio single then a stolen base. She advanced to third after a fly out from Jessica Goldyn to center field. Cuevas earned another RBI on the day as she singled home Norcio. With the Bulls down by one their luck would soon run out.
With Langlois in the circle, the Bulls gave up an additional eight runs in the top of the seventh. The Bulls were unsuccessful in the bottom half to end the game with a final score of 12-3.
The Bulls return tomorrow for their last game of the Lion Classic II at 10am against Southeast Missouri State.
