BUFFALO — Former University at Buffalo baseball left-handed pitcher Mike McGee signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday afternoon. McGee becomes the third UB baseball pitcher to sign a professional contract this season, joining Mike Kaelin (Los Angeles Angels) and Blair Lakso (Minnesota Twins), the most players in a single season in program history.
McGee becomes the 43rd UB baseball player to sign a professional contract and the sixth in the past three seasons. The former flamethrower sat out last season while recovering from injury and fought back to earn his chance in the pros.
In 2015, McGee finished out his senior season making 13 starts while striking out 58 batters across 54.1 innings of work and holding opposing batters to a .259 batting average against. The lefty struck out a career-high 10 batters against Kent State while earning his first win of the season against Northern Illinois as he struck out nine batters across 5.0 innings and allowed just one hit.
For his career, McGee ranks 2nd in starts (39), 6th in innings pitched (190.1) and 7th in strikeouts (161).
The Bulls currently have seven former student-athletes who are signed to play professional baseball in 2017, most at one time in program history.
