CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University at Buffalo’s swimming and diving team swept Cleveland State this Saturday in dramatic fashion. The Bulls defeated the Vikings 149-94 (men) and 160-83 (women). The Bulls had multiple first and second place finishes that helped lead them to their victory.

The women had ten first places finishes: nine of them being in individual events. Hannah Miller helped lead the Bulls to their victory over the Vikings with three individual first place finishes. Miller took first in the 200 Free, clocking in at 1:53.65. Her time of 5:11.51 in the 500 Free beat out second place teammate Kerry Giovanniello by nearly four seconds. Miller also took first place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.92. Not far behind her in second place was teammate Brittney Walters. The Bulls also saw individual first place finishes from Megan Burns, Sarah Baxter, and Julia Box who had two first place finishes each. M. Burns took first in the 50 Back and 100 Free. Her time of 26.46 in the 50 Back was over one second faster than second, and allowed teammate Claudia Casale to take third with a time of 29.81. Burns also took first in the 100 Free with a time of 50.59, also two seconds ahead of teammate Baxter. Baxter’s individual first place finishes were in the 50 Free (24.16) and 50 Fly (25.65). Box’s individual first place finishes came in the 100 Fly (55.94) and the 100 Back (56.18). Box and M. Burns were also members of the first place 200 Free Relay team with teammates Andrea Ernst and Catherine Schultheis. The team worked to clocked in at 1:34.66.


The men finished with nine first place finishes: eight being individual finishes. Itai De La Vega, Charles Barry, and Hudson Carroll each had two individual first place finish and both were members of the first place 200 Free Relay team alongside Eric Jensen and Mason Miller. The 200 Free Relay team clocked in at 1:22.20 for first place. De La Vega took first in the 100 Breast and 50 Breast. His time of 25.83 in the 50 Breast put him just ahead of teammate Garrett Clarke, who clocked in 26.03. De La Vega also led the way for the Bulls in the 100 Breast with a time of 56.33. The Bulls took first through third with Clarke in second and Luke Otto in third. Barry took first in the 500 Free and 400 IM. He clocked in at 4:07.40 in the 400 IM, over four seconds ahead of teammate Reid Zyniecki. His first place finish in the 500 Free helped lead the Bulls to place first through third in the event. Barry clocked in at 4:40.16; teammates Zyniecki and Callum Liddiard took second and third, respectively. Carroll’s first place finishes came in the 100 Back and 50 Back. He clocked in at 23.40 in the 50 Back, and led the way in the 100 Back. Carroll clocked in at 50.44 in the 100 Back for first, with teammates Joseph Puglessi and Scott Huang coming in second and third, respectively. Also taking first for the Bulls were Mason Miller (100 Free, 46.73), Eric Jensen (200 Free, 1:41.47)
