WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, is one of 60-or-so Democrats who will be skipping today’s inauguration of Donald Trump due to his spat with Georgia Congressman John Lewis.

“I take the privilege of serving as a member of Congress seriously, so this was not an easy decision,” Slaughter said. “Congressman John Lewis and I came to Congress at the same time, and he has become like a brother to me. He came to Rochester late last year and visited the convent where nuns from Rochester saved his life on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. For all that he’s stood for all these years, I’m happy to stand with him. As tough as this decision is, I was sent to Washington to get things done, which is why I will be working with the president-elect in the years ahead to move my district and our nation forward.”

Slaughter will be in Washington today and attend a bipartisan Congressional lunch with the president-elect following the inauguration ceremony.

Slaughter’s Washington, D.C. office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today for constituents traveling to the nation’s capital for events surrounding the inauguration and the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday. Slaughter’s Washington office is located in room 2469 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Buffalo Democrat Brian Higgins will be attending the inauguration, as will Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
