Nationally, gas prices are finally retreating with the national average price for regular unleaded gasoline now at $2.34 per gallon, down three cents from last week, but up 43 cents from one year ago. The New York State average is unchanged from last week at $2.54 per gallon. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.16.

Locally, it’s a tale of two cities with a gallon of unleaded up a penny in Buffalo to $2.47 and down a penny in Rochester to $2.47, according to AAA.

Information Service (OPIS) analysts say gas will cost more in 2017 and prices could even surpass levels seen in 2015, but will not reach the levels that consumers paid back in 2011-2014.

OPIS says motorists are getting a break this holiday weekend (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) but warns that prices could hit the $2.65 to $2.85 range nationally this spring when refineries do annual maintenance, which means New York State drivers would be paying even more.
