BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo wrestling team put on a dominant performance in defeating Columbia, 32-3, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls won all but one match on the day to improve their dual record to 5-3 on the season.

The Bulls got off to a quick start and never looked back. Kyle Akins got things rolling with a 6-0 decision over Johnson Mai. Akins improved to 4-0 in duals on the season.

Bryan Lantry followed with a 9-2 decision over Alex Kelly at 133. Lantry had three takedowns in the match to improve to 6-1 in duals on the year.

Jason Estevez had the best match of the day as he was able to pin Jacob Macalolooy, a 10-win opponent, in just 1:08. It was his first pin of the season. Estevez continues to improve, winning his second straight dual match.

At 149, Colt Cotten shut out Dan Reed, 7-0. It was Cotten’s fifth straight dual win as the senior improved to 5-3 in duals on the year.

Alex Smythe followed at 157 with a 6-2 decision over Brock Morgan. With the match tied, 2-2. Smythe earned a takedown in the second and another in the third period to pull away for the win.

Muhamed McBryde won an 8-4 decision over Austin Coniker at 174 to keep the Bulls rolling. It was McBryde’s second dual win of the season.

At 184, Brett Perry earned a major decision over Donny Donnelly, 10-2. Perry gained six points in the third period to earn the major.

Nate Rose wrestled in a home dual for the first time in his career and didn’t disappoint the UB faithful. The redshirt-freshman earned a 14-0 major decision over Mike Bulkin. Rose improved to 3-0 in duals on the year.

Jake Gunning capped the day off with a 6-3 decision over Garrett Ryan. Gunning trailed, 1-0, entering the third period, before scoring all six of his points to defeat Columbia’s national-qualifier.

“This win was good for us,” head coach John Stutzman said. “We spent a lot of time this week on top and bottom and I think it really showed today. We rode hard and got off the bottom. We’re progressing and just keep need to progress.”

The Bulls will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
