The Quinnipiac Bobcats used a 23-13 fourth quarter to outlast the Canisius women’s basketball team, 64-53, at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday. With the loss Canisius drops to 3-12 and 2-4 in conference action, while Quinnipiac improves to 13-3 and a perfect 6-0 in MAAC play.
Despite holding decificts in rebounding and turnovers, the Griffs kept the game close through a majority of the contest. Canisius trailed by just one, 41-40 headed into the fourth quarter, before a quick 9-3 run by the Bobcats, thanks to six points by Paula Strautmane, staked claim to a lead the team didn’t relinquish.
Margret Halfdanardottir led Canisius offensively with 12 points, she also chipped in two rebounds. Country-mate Sara Hinriksdottir also hit double-figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Lauren D’Hont was the third Canisius player to reach double-digits with 10 points and three rebounds.
Hinriksdottir continues to be a source of production across the stat sheet, producing as the second leading scorer, and was first in rebounds (six) and assists (4) on the team.
Jen Fay led a hampered Quinnipiac offense scoring 16 points for the Bobcats. Also notching double-figures was Adily Martucci and Strautmane.
Strautmane proved to be dangerous on the glass as well, recording a double-double with 10 rebounds to go with her 10 points. Also patrolling the glass was Sara Shewan as she came down with 10 boards.
The Griffs shot slightly better than the Bobcats, recording a shooting percentage of 31.9 (15-of-47) for the game. The Griffs defense held the Bobcats to 21-of-70 for a mark of 30 percent.
The telling stats of the game came in the rebounding department, as Quinnipiac came down with 26 offensive rebounds and with that scored 21 second-chance points.
Quinnipiac outrebounded the Griffs 54-35 for the game, and turned it over eight fewer times, 18-10.
The Blue and Gold will now prepare for a three-game road swing, taking on Saint Peter’s on Friday, followed by Monmouth on Jan. 15. After the weekend match ups, the Griffs head up to local rival, Niagara, for a mid-week matchup on Jan. 18.
