UB wrestling splits against George Mason and Princeton at the Grapple at the Garden

Against George Mason in the opener, the Bulls got off to a great start as Derek Spann and Bryan Lantry pinned their respective opponents to put the Bulls ahead, 12-0. Spann pinned Trevor Mello at the 5:42 mark for his first career pin in a dual. Lantry pinned his opponent, Lio Quezada, at the 6:10 mark.

After the Patriots won the next three duals in decisions, Derek Holcomb got the Bulls back on track with a 5-2 decision over Garrett Tingen in the 157 match. It was Holcomb’s first career dual win.

Muhamed McBryde followed with a 5-3 decision over Patrick Davis at 174. Brett Perry earned his first career pin in dual action and UB’s third of the day when he took down Eli Spencer at the 4:46 mark.

Nate Rose got the start at 197 and totally dominated Andrew Thomas, earning a 15-0 tech fall. Jake Gunning finished off the Patriots with a 6-3 decision over Matthew Voss.

In their second dual of the day, the Bulls went up against #19 Princeton. Despite some impressive individual performances, UB lost to the Tigers, 28-12.

James Benjamin (197) had UB’s biggest win of the day, earning a 7-5 overtime decision over Brett Harner, an All-American and 4th-ranked wrestler in the nation.

Lantry won his second match of the day by earning a 4-1 decision over Pat D’arcy. Lantry stayed perfect on the season, improving to 5-0.

Gunning earned a forfeit win at 285 for his second victory of the day. Like Lantry, Gunning is undefeated on the season at 5-0.

“We had mixed results today,” head coach John Stutzman said. “We beat a good George Mason team and lost to nationally-ranked Princeton. Overall, Bryan Lantry wrestled well, going 2-0. His hard work is really paying off. James Benjamin is wrestling very well and was able to beat the 4th-ranked guy in the country.”

The Bulls will next compete at Ohio next Sunday.
