Canisius freshman David Hanes has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month for October, the league office announced today (Nov. 2). Hanes is the first Canisius golfer to earn a monthly award from the MAAC since the program started in 2011.

The Elma, New York native won the 2016 Little Three Championship medalist honors and became the first Canisius freshmen in the last 30 years to record back-to-back rounds in the 60s, as the Golden Griffins competed in four fall events from Sept. 28 through Oct. 15. On Sept. 28, he won the Little Three Championship, and the tournament’s automatic berth into the 2017 Porter Cup, after he shot a two-round total of 139, highlighted by his career-low score of 66 in the second round. That was the lowest round for a Canisius golfer since 2007.

Hanes followed that effort by posting a four-under score of 68 in the first round of the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha course in Apalachin, N.Y. For the month, he posted a 72.4 scoring average in seven rounds. Hanes ended the Griffs’ fall season as the team’s top finisher in every fall event, the first time a Canisius freshman has accomplished that since full program records are available (going back to 1986).
