The University at Buffalo has named Scout McLerran and Russell Cicerone as its athletes of the week.
McLerran, a freshman, had one of the best weekends that any UB setter has had in school history as she recorded 117 assists over two matches, the most by a UB player since 2005 and the most ever in the current 25-point scoring format. McLerran also added five kills, six service aces and 19 digs, leading the Bulls to the weekend split. On Friday night, McLerran finished with 64 assists, the most by a player in the MAC this season and the most in a match for any UB setter in over a decade. She added three aces and 12 digs against the Chippewas. One night late, McLerran added 53 more assists in a 3-2 win over Eastern Michigan, while chipping in five kills in the victory and three service aces, including the match-clinching point. She now leads the Bulls this season with 759 assists and 24 aces, while her .299 hitting percentage is second on the team.
Senior midfielder Cicerone continued to produce when his team needs it the most as he was able to net the game-tying goal with 52 seconds remaining in the match on Friday night against Western Michigan. With less than a minute remaining, Alec Fisher sent a great cross into the box where Cicerone went up in a crowd and headed home the game-tying goal to help the Bulls earn the 1-1 draw. He finished off his match with two shots and his team-leading 12th goal of the season. With his goal, Cicerone went over the 100 career point plateau, becoming just the second player in UB history and third player in MAC history to do so. The Bloomfield Hills, MI native owns the UB record for goals in a career (40) and also sits second in MAC history. On the year, he has netted 12 goals and eight assists for 32 points, ranking third in the NCAA in points while becoming the second player in UB history to notch back-to-back 30+ point seasons for the Bulls.
