BUFFALO – The University at Buffalo’s swimming and diving team had their first meet of the season on Saturday against the Cornell Bears. The event was a non-scoring meet, but Buffalo proved an impressive showing in both the pool and the diving well.

Buffalo dominated in the swimming pool, placing first in 23 of 28 swimming events. Buffalo placed first and second in the women’s 200 Medley Relay. Maddy Jacumski, Anna Vitolins, Sarah Baxter, and Megan Burns took away first place with a time of 1:45.69, less than a second faster than teammates Andrea Ernst, Grace Baumer, Saoirse Paul-Benson, and Eve Kosten. For the men’s 200 Medley Relay; Ryan Gordon, Garrett Clarke, Mason Miller, and Eric Jensen dominated in the pool, clocking in at 1:30.72 and beating second place by nearly two seconds. Buffalo also took first in the women’s 200 Free Relay, and second in the men’s 200 Free Relay. The “A” team of Baxter, Kosten, Ernst, and Burns beat second place by one second, clocking in at 1:35.20; while the men’s “A” team of Andrew Cole-Goins, Aaron Durrence, Jensen, and Miller took second with a time of 1:24.05.

Charles Barry won two individual events: 400 IM and 500 Free. Barry clocked in at 4:00.09 in the 400 IM, beating second place by exactly nine seconds. His time of 4:37.39 in the 500 Free was over four seconds faster than Marc Morizono from Cornell who took home second. Right alongside Charles Barry with two first place finishes was Megan Burns. Burns had an impressive showing in the first meet of the reason, taking first in both the 50 and 100 Free. Her time of 22.89 in the 50 Free was just 0.7 seconds slower than her school record achieved last year at the MAC Championships. Burns also clocked in at 50.58 in the 100 Free to take away first, beating second place by nearly three seconds.

The freshmen swimmers had an impressive first meet, placing first in three different events. Anna Vitolins and Grace Baumer took away first and second (respectively) in the 100 Breast; Vitolins clocked in at 1:05.78 and Baumer clocked in at 1:05.83. Baumer also took away first in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:20.45, beating second place by nearly five seconds. Joseph Puglessi, a freshman from Ada, Michigan, took first in the 200 Breast, clocking in at 1:53.92.

Buffalo’s diving team dominated in the well, taking away the top three spots in both the men’s and women’s one- and three-meter dives. Abbey Croce (1st), Valerie Lortie (2nd), and Mackenzie Moss (3rd) scored 277.58, 260.55, and 255.75 respectively in the one-meter dives. Moss’ score beat the fourth place winner by over 25 points. On the men’s one-meter side, Nick Rodriguez (359.40), Kristian Santos (345.83), and Troy Birdsall (287.78) took away first, second, and third respectively. The men repeated that order in the three-meter dive, scoring 304.58, 284.18, and 275.63 respectively. Mackenzie Moss took way first in the women’s three-meter dive, scoring an impressive 290.78. Right behind her was Valerie Lorite scoring a 275.10 and freshman Olivia Gosselin scoring a 250.13.

The Bulls are back in the pool and well next Friday when they head out to Pittsburgh for a 5:00 pm meet.
