The Canisius men’s soccer takes to the road on Saturday for a key MAAC contest at Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

The Canisius men’s soccer team ended a three-game skid on Wednesday, as the Golden Griffins scored a 2-1 win over Saint Peter’s at home. The Griffs scored two goals in the span of 1:27 en route to the victory. Junior Mathew Santos recorded his first goal of the season and assisted on the eventual game-winning tally by fellow junior Eric Strauchen. That goal for Strauchen was his first career marker. The 2-1 victory over Saint Peter’s improved Canisius to 6-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in MAAC play. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Marco Trivellato made three saves in the win for the Blue and Gold. His record is now 5-5-1 this season.

The MAAC schedule has passed the midway point, and as of Oct. 21, six teams are within six points of third-place in the league’s standings. Canisius has seven points this year with its 2-3-1 league mark. Siena and Monmouth start the weekend tied for third place. Both schools have 12 points. The top-six teams in the league’s final standings earn a berth into the MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. The top-two seeds earn a first-round bye, while teams three through six will play a first round game, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5. The Griffs will play three of their final four games against teams ahead of them in the standings, as of Oct. 21. The Griffs’ final game of the regular season will be at Niagara, a team that is just one point behind the Blue and Gold.

While the Griffs have struggled to score at times this season, the team’s defense has been top-notch, allowing more than two goals in a game just once all season. Canisius enters this weekend’s action tied for second in the MAAC in fewest goals allowed with 1.07 per outing, and the squad’s 1.04 goals against average ranks third-best in the league. Redshirt-junior Marco Trivellato ranks in the top-five in every goalkeeper statistical category within the MAAC.
