NIAGARA UNIV. — The Niagara Purple Eagles defeated the Manhattan Jaspers in four sets on Sunday for their fourth straight victory and to improve to 5-0 at home this season.

The opening set went back-and-forth before Niagara seized momentum late in the set. With the score knotted at 21-21, a kill by Nicole Matheis followed by a pair of kills by Caroline Leitch surged NU ahead en route to claiming the set, 25-22. After trailing 10-6 in the second set, the Purple Eagles crept back into the match to tie the set four times. A kill by Madison May put NU in front, 18-17, as the Purple Eagles pulled away for the 25-20 victory. The Jaspers answered in the third set with their most efficient set of the match. Manhattan had 15 kills on a match-best .394 hitting percentage, while was 13-for-17 (.76) on sideouts. Manhattan never trailed on its way to winning the set. In the fourth set, Niagara built an 11-6 lead after going on a 5-0 spurt. The Purple Eagles’ lead was trimmed to 12-11, but they halted any comeback attempt with their lead increasing as much as seven points.

Niagara has won three straight matches and five of its last six matches and is off to its best home start since 2011 when it won eight straight.

The Purple Eagles travel to play archrival Canisius on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
