NIAGARA UNIV. — The Niagara women’s soccer team lost a tough battle with the Rider Broncs on Saturday.
Niagara created offensive chances early in the first period. Hailey Bicknell took the Purple Eagles’ first shot of the game in the fifth minute, followed by a shot from Laura Ortiz in the seventh minute; both shots were saved by Rider’s keeper. Kori Thorne had a chance in the 22nd minute; she took a header with a clear shot at the goal, but it went right into the arms of the Broncs’ keeper.
Breanna Guevara took the last shot of the first half in the 45th minute.
Eva Bachmann took the first shot of the second half for Niagara in the 63rd minute, following a corner kick from Kelsey Lafferty. The shot went wide of the goal. Rider scored what would be the game winning goal in the 70th minute. Niagara followed up with a shot from Assia Sidhoum in the 74th minute, which was saved. Sidhoum took the last shot of the game in the 88th minute; it was blocked.
“I thought we did some very good things today,” said Purple Eagles head coach Peter Veltri. “I thought we dominated the first 45 minutes and played some of our best soccer in a while. We had some great opportunities to score, but credit to Rider’s keeper with some big saves.”
The Purple Eagles head out for a two-game road trip, taking on Siena at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Monmouth at noon Oct. 8.
