FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara volleyball team had its two-match win streak snapped in a three-set defeat at MAAC co-leaders Fairfield on Saturday.

The Stags were powered by a .352 hitting percentage to go along with 51 digs, 40 assists and eight blocks. Fairfield opened the match with a 6-1 run on its way to winning the first set, 25-10.

In the second set, NU trailed 14-12 after a kill by Madison May and later trailed 19-16 before Fairfield scored six straight points to win the set. The Purple Eagles fell behind early to start the third set. NU cut the lead to 13-10, but it was the closet NU would get.

Nicole Matheis led Niagara with seven kills and added five digs. A pair of Purple Eagles extended their respective double-digit streaks.  Alexis Gray led Niagara with 11 assists to have at least 11 assists in every match this season. Rylee Hunt had 12 digs to extend her double-digit digs run to 16 straight matches.

NU Head Coach Vilis Ozols said, “Fairfield showed us the standard of play at the top of the conference standings today. We had a long productive team meeting in the aftermath and I’m confident we’ll grow and evolve from our experience in this match.”

The Purple Eagles face Quinnipiac on Sunday at 1 p.m.
