BUFFALO — Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) scored seven minutes into the game, giving Buffalo State the only marker it would need in a 3-0 win over visiting D’Youville this afternoon at Coyer Field.
Smith got the Bengals on the board first, fighting for a loose ball, gaining control of it and chipping it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Buffalo State lead. The Bengals kept the pressure on during the entire first half, outshooting D’Youville 13-0, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the second.
Tianna Hatch (Endicott/Elmira Free Acad.) broke through in the 56th minute, finding the back of the net off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Smith to push the lead to 2-0. Just a minute and 16 seconds later, Breanna Knight (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South) found herself open in the middle of the field and ripped a strike from 20 yards out into the top of the net to put the Bengals up for good, 3-0.
Buffalo State outshot D’Youville 26-0, with 12 of the Bengals’ shots hitting the net. Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) recorded her second shutout of the season in the victory.
Buffalo State will kick off SUNYAC play, heading to Geneseo on Friday, Sept. 23 to take on the Knights at 4:00 p.m.
