BUFFALO — University at Buffalo sophomore soccer forward Carissima Cutrona has been named Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. This marks the first time in Cutrona’s UB career she has earned the weekly MAC honor.

After making the switch to forward prior to the season, Cutrona has flourished up top for the Bulls this season and she continued her strong play last weekend as UB went 1-0-1. The Williamsville native had a great game in the Bulls’ 0-0 draw against Brown on Thursday night as she notched three shots including two great efforts on goal.

On Sunday, Cutrona was a force on the offensive end of the field as she took over the second half with the score tied, 1-1. The speedy forward netted her first goal of the match in the 73rd minute as she took a perfect cross from Nicole Gerritz and deposited the ball into the right corner of the net with a perfect shot. Just over three minutes later, Cutrona calmly headed home a Adrianna VanCuyck cross to give the Bulls the 3-1 lead and eventual win.

The game-winner for Cutrona was her team-leading second of the season and it was her second career two-goal contest, both of which coming this season. Cutrona finished the weekend with eight shots and six on goal while netting a team-best two markers for the surging Bulls.

On the year, Cutrona leads the Bulls with a career-high five goals and 10 points while ranking second on the squad with 15 shots, trailing only Julia Benati who has 22 shots through six matches.

The Bulls return to the pitch at 7 p.m. Friday as they welcome Big 4 foe Canisius to UB Stadium for a non-conference match.
