Portland, OR—The Niagara baseball teams traveled west to start a four game series with Portland. In the first game of the series the Purple Eagles fell 19-2 at the hands of the Pilots.
Game Recap
- The Purple Eagles scored in the first inning to start the game. Nick Groves drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A groundout moved him to third and with one out Cole Tucker grounded out but drove in the run to make it 1-0.
- Portland responded in the bottom of the third inning as they scored three runs to make it a 3-1 game.
- In the top of the fourth, Niagara made it one run game as Matt Ward singled home Cole Tucker who singled to opened the inning with a single.
- Portland scored six in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-2 after four innings. They then scored seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another three in the eighth to make it 19-2.
Niagara Notes
- The Niagara pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts with Preston Prince, Liam Reynolds, and Zac Laird all having two each.
- Tucker, Ward, Max Giordano, Jake Hutchins, and Vincent Mauro all had a hit in the game.
- Groves drew a pair of walks while both Giordano and Josh Marchese each had one. Marchese is tied for the MAAC lead with 11 walks this season.
