BUFFALO — A Paul Byron overtime goal for the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night by a score of 3-2.
Byron broke in to the Buffalo zone with Torrey Mitchell against Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian. His pass — intended for Mitchell — went off Bogosian’s stick and past Sabres’ netminder Robin Lehner at 3:45 of the extra period.
It was Bogosian who got the scoring started, scoring 15:17 into the first period. Ryan O’Reilly and Rasmus Ristolainen assisted on the goal.
In the second period, Montreal took a 2-1 lead on goals by Greg Pateryn 47 seconds in and Andrei Markov witih only three seconds remaining in the period. Pateryn’s goal was assisted by Alex Galchenyuk, while Markov’s power play goal was assisted by Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty.
Marcus Foligno tied the game for Buffalo in the third period. David Legwand and Mark Pysyk assisted on the goal at 11:56.
Then Byron’s goal sealed the deal for Montreal.
Buffalo, now 28-33-10, next plays Friday night against the Ottawa Senators at First Niagara Center.

- With Montreal’s win, the road team has now won 11 of the last 16 matchups between the Sabres and Canadiens.
- Zach Bogosian (goal tonight) now has 10 points (4+6) in his last 12 games.
