BUFFALO — Buffalo State scored four second period goals to cruise to a 6-0 victory over visiting Nichols to close out the Buffalo State Invitational at the Ice Arena this evening.
Buffalo State had seven players finish with multi-point games. Emma Ruggiero (Amherst/Sacred Heart), Caitie Horvatits (Elma/Iroquois), Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park/Nardin), Kristine Strawberry (Edmonton/Freshstart Westmount) and Missy Mallon (Amherst/Amherst) each scored a goal and chipped in one assist. Erin Gehen (West Seneca/West Seneca West) was the other goal scorer for the Bengals while defensemen Emily DeCock (Ramara, ON/Patrick Fogarty) and Megan Reukauf (Depew/Lancaster) each added two assists.
Ruggiero opened the scoring 5:38 into the second period, and Mallon stuck just 11 seconds later after the ensuing faceoff to give Buffalo State a 2-0 lead. Horvatits converted a chance off of what looked to be a normal rush back up the ice, but she turned on the burners, slipped behind the Bison defense and put home a beautiful pass from Lenard to make it 3-0 Bengals, 12:05 into the second. Just 14 seconds later, Strawberry found the back of the net to make it 4-0, Buffalo State. Buffalo State held a 33-2 edge in shots after two periods of play. Lenard scored 7:24 into the third and Gehen ended things with her tally with just 45 seconds remaining in the game. Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) and Serena Angelo (Rochester/Greece-Athena) combined for the Buffalo State shutout. Angelo played the third period and led the Bengals with four saves while Silva took the first two periods, picking up the win. Buffalo State outshot Nichols, 47-7 and held a 50-15 edge in faceoffs.
Buffalo State gets ECAC West play underway against visiting Utica at 4 p.m. Friday at the Ice Arena.
