BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS

CORTLAND — Oneonta outlasted Buffalo State through two rain delays and a pair of rally attempts to advance in an elimination game with a 5-4 victory today at the SUNYAC Championships at Cortland.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Oneonta – 5, Buffalo State – 4
LOCATION: Red Dragon Field – Cortland, NY
RECORDS: Oneonta (24-13), Buffalo State (16-23)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Allie Block (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) had two of the Bengals’ six hits, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  She was also in the circle for the loss, allowing 10 hits with five strikeouts.
  • Cassandra O’Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Julia Blujus(Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Oneonta took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back run-scoring doubles in the third inning.
  • The Bengals produced just a single base-runner in the first three innings, but after a nearly one-hour rain delay, Buffalo State’s bats came to life in the fourth.  A hit by pitch started the inning, and then the Bengals tied the game on back-to-back RBI doubles of their own by Block and O’Hern.
  • The Red Dragons wasted little time reclaiming the lead, however, leading off the top of the fifth with a solo home run.
  • Oneonta scored again on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, but the Bengals answered in the bottom of the frame with a sac fly by O’Hern to cut the deficit back to one.
  • The Red Dragons added another insurance marker in the seventh inning on another sac fly after a pair of singles to go up 5-3.
  • The game was delayed another 32 minutes due to rain in the middle of the seventh inning and Buffalo State hoped to once again harness rally power from the delay.
  • After the leadoff batter reached on an error, Blujus hit a one-out RBI single to cut the margin to 5-4.  The Bengals then capitalized on another throwing error to put runners on first and second with one out, but a ground-ball double-play ended the threat and the Bengals’ season.

FOR THE FOES

  • Sabrina DeAngelis pitched the win for Oneonta, allowing just six hits and three earned runs.
  • Dana DelGenio was 2 for 4 with a home run.
  • Katie O’Gorman and Brooke Corbett also had two hits each.

NOTEWORTHY
