Eugene ‘Benjie’ Giazzon, 93, of Lockport passed away peacefully at home May 29, 2017. Born July 8, 1923 in Vintindale, PA he was the son of Italian immigrants, Joseph and Maria Theresa (Curtoli) Giazzon and the oldest of twelve children. He graduated from Vintondale High School in 1941, where he played baseball and basketball. Eugene then became a coal miner for the Vinton Colliery in August 1941, working with his father, digging and loading coal with a pick and shovel. On his last day of mining, six miles inside the No. 6 mine he was seriously injured in a roof collapse and had to be rescued by his fellow miners. After a lengthy recovery, Eugene moved his family to Lockport in late 1960, first working at the United Board & Paper Corp., then Harrison Radiator Div. GM, where he retired in 1985 after 20 years of service. Eugene was a good union man and was proud that he always worked in a union shop. Eugene was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Navy from May 1943 to February 1946 in the Pacific Theater as a sailor in the Naval Armed Guard. He was a founding member and former officer of the Herbert B. Daly VFW Post in Vintondale, PA. Eugene and his wife, Edith kept an impeccable yard and bountiful and weed free garden and were well known for their delicious spaghetti sauce and generosity.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Edith (Sandolfini) his wife of 65 years and three children, Maria (Mark) Gamble, Benjie (Judy), and Joseph (Joan); six grandchildren Rhiannon, Marisa, Jessica, Angela, Michael, and Paul; two great grandchildren Christian and Layne. Also brothers, Paul and Robert Giazzon and sisters Olga Hegedus, Angelina Holt, and Evelyn Murawski. He was predeceased by brothers Louis and Mario Giazzon and sisters Emma, Claire (Smillie), Ida (Slough), and Patricia (Mock). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday, June 1st from 1-3 and 6-8 PM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 2nd at 10 AM in All Saints Parish, 76 Church St., Lockport. Interment will be in Cold Springs Cemetery.
