The Red Wings beat the Norfolk Tides 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Sunday’s paid attendance of 6,951 pushed the four-game home series total to 40,058 – the most for any four-game series at Frontier since 2008. The Wings will return home on Monday, August 21 to host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees)
Norfolk scored early off Wings starting pitcher Tim Melville. Drew Dosch hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give the Tides an early 1-0 lead.
The Red Wings tied the game in the bottom half of the first. Kennys Vargas hit a sac-fly off Norfolk starter Gabriel Yona that allowed Zach Granite to score and make it a 1-1 game.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Tides used a walk and a double to put runners at second and third with none out. The Tides cashed in for a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Wings took advantage of a Norfolk error to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Engelb Vielma blooped a hit to shallow center field that was dropped by Tides outfielder Logan Schafer. Vielma, who was running hard, slid in safely to second base. Two batters later, Daniel Palka drove in Vielma with an RBI single to make the score 3-2 Norfolk.
The Wings offense continued the momentum in the sixth inning. Kennys Vargas led off with a single, followed by a two-run home run by Niko Goodrum. Goodrum’s 10th home run off the season put the Wings ahead 4-3.
Melville exited the game after a solid 6.2 innings. He gave up three earned runs, four hits and three walks. Melville struck out six batters throwing 97 pitches (59 strikes). Nik Turley entered the game by strking out Chris Johnson to end the Norfolk rally.
Ynoa worked 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with no walks and seven strikeouts. Ynoa threw 98 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Turley struck out two in 1.2 innings, and Alex Wimmers worked the ninth inning – getting three quick outs for his sixth save.
