While it may be my website name, I have calmed down on technical death metal. Many bands have grown stale and isn’t palatable. Shred fests are great but you still need to know how to write a song. Infected Dead contacted me about their upcoming EP and entertained it. While I’ve had a busy summer so far, I’ve finally gotten around to putting this out. “Invicta” dropped on May 1st independently. The only thing I don’t care too much for is the vocals. I wish there was more low end and the higher range is okay. Does he suck? Absolutely not. He’s not Chris Barnes. It doesn’t take away from the music, I’m just accustomed to obnoxiously brutal vocals.

The guitar work is very meticulous with lots of great melody. It’s not always fast and is well thought out. They’re not trying to overdo themselves in a genre known for its wankery. Tapping and sweeping isn’t overdone and is more tasteful throughout the EP. I enjoy the compositions a lot from a fellow guitarist viewpoint.

The mix is very good as well, as the bass is very audible. That’s always a beef of mine in any genre as bass guitar is drowned in the low end with the bass drum. You can hear a lot of the bass notes even on quicker parts. Nothing dominates it too much to where it’s enjoyable. I definitely dig it. The drums are good considering the demanding style of the genre. There are good rhythms while it gets crazy at times.

It’s a pretty good release that has many bright spots. It’s also very digestible at 21 minutes over 4 songs. It’s definitely something I wouldn’t have checked out if I wasn’t contacted. I’m glad I was and pleasantly reminded some tech death bands can still write good songs.
