LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — After winning three straight matches, Niagara’s win streak was snapped on Sunday with a loss to Rider in straight sets.
Match Summary
First Set
- The Broncs got off to a quick lead in the first set and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the set.
- A 5-0 run from Rider put the Broncs up 11-4.
- Niagara cut the lead to eight points, 19-11, but a 4-0 run from Rider put them back ahead comfortably, 23-11.
- The Broncs won the first set 25-12 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Second Set
- The Broncs opened set two with a 4-0 run, but the Purple Eagles answered with a 5-0 run, including kills from Mary Redl and Jessica Streuer and an ace from Jaycie Roberts, to take a 5-4 lead.
- Another run from the Purple Eagles, kicked off by a kill from Cameron Maris, kept NU in the lead, 10-6. The Broncs, however, responded with a 4-0 run to tie the score, 10-10.
- Niagara reclaimed the lead, 12-10, but the Broncs scored six straight points to take their largest lead of the set, 16-12.
- A 4-0 run from the Purple Eagles, punctuated with two straight kills from Grace Hetterscheidt, knotted the score, 16-16.
- The Purple Eagles and the Broncs went back and forth but Rider would claim the set, 25-22, and take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
- Niagara opened the third set scoring three consecutive points to take a 3-0 lead. The Purple Eagles kept their lead at three points, 6-3, but the Broncs went on a 4-0 run to take the advantage, 7-6.
- The Purple Eagles reclaimed their lead, 8-7, but the Broncs went on a 5-0 run to wrest the lead from Niagara and get ahead, 12-8.
- The Purple Eagles and the Broncs rallied back and forth but a late 5-0 run from Rider put the Broncs ahead, 22-15, and they would go on to win the set, 25-17.
Eagle’s Eye On…
- Roberts and Caroline Leitch had a team-best six kills each. Streuer added five kills and Redl had four.
- Roberts and Emillie Wright led the Purple Eagles in digs with eight each.
- Streuer recorded a team-high 22 assists.
- Hetterscheidt had two solo blocks.
