CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
PHILADELPHIA, P.A. — In the last event of its fall schedule, the Canisius rowing program competed against national competition in the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday.
The varsity four took home fifth in the Women’s Championship 4+ race before the varsity eight placed 15th in the Women’s Club Championship 8+.
With the weather in Philadelphia, PA not cooperating, the regatta saw the first five events of the day cancelled due to unsafe rowing conditions. This included the Women’s Novice 4+, which the Golden Griffins were scheduled to race in.
In the first race of the day for the Griffs, the varsity four finished in the top five of the Women’s Championship 4+, along with boats from the University of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the Potomac Boat Club. A time of 15:40.079 for the Blue and Gold edged out the sixth-place Temple “C” boat by over two seconds.
In the afternoon, the Griffs’ varsity eight posted a 14:35.829 time, good for 15th in the Women’s Club Championship 8+ event. The varsity eight was edged out by a crew from Army, and finished under a minute behind the first-place Penn boat.
Head Coach Kerri Brace‘s Postrace Comments
“We are extremely pleased with today’s results. Though we were disappointed that the weather caused the novice four to be cancelled, we’re very proud of how our team handled the day. For our varsity four to finish top five out of 43 crews is a true testament to their work ethic. They have worked diligently this week and it showed today. The varsity eight followed with another strong showing for us, taking the lessons learned this week in practice and applying them to today’s race. To finish in the top third of a competitive field is very exciting.”
