NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Purple Eagles closed out their 2018 home schedule with a 3-2 victory over Manhattan on Sunday, improving to 6-0 in five-set matches this season.
Match Summary
First Set
- The Purple Eagles went on a 3-0 run early in the first set to take the lead over the Jaspers, 4-1.
- A 4-0 run from the Jaspers soon after put them in the lead, 8-6.
- Niagara took back the lead, 14-13, after a service error from Manhattan and a service ace from Mary Redl.
- The Jaspers reclaimed the lead, 16-15, but a 3-0 run from the Purple Eagles, including kills from Grace Hetterscheidt and Caroline Leitch, gave them the advantage, 18-16.
- The Purple Eagles extended their lead, 20-17, but Manhattan went on a 3-0 run to tie the score, 20-20.
- Niagara got back in the lead, 21-20, but another 3-0 run from the Jaspers put them ahead, 23-21. The Jaspers hung on to win the set, 25-23.
Second Set
- The second set was another close one between the Purple Eagles and the Jaspers and the score was tied eight times throughout the set.
- Niagara and Manhattan scored back and forth and, midway through the set, the Jaspers led 17-15. The Purple Eagles quickly tied the score, 17-17.
- The Jaspers reclaimed the lead, 21-17, after a 4-0 run, but the Purple Eagles answered with a 3-0 run and trailed by only one point, 21-20.
- With the Jaspers ahead 23-21, the Purple Eagles scored four straight points to win the set, 25-23, and tied the match at one set apiece.
Third Set
- Manhattan went on a 5-0 run early in set three to take the lead, 7-4. Niagara answered with a 4-0 run to wrest the lead away from Jaspers, 8-7.
- Manhattan got ahead once again, 17-15, but a 5-0 run from NU which included three kills from Leitch and one from Hetterscheidt, put the Purple Eagles on top, 20-17.
- The Purple Eagles held onto their lead for the remainder of the set, winning set three, 25-21, to take a 2-1 match lead over the Jaspers.
Fourth Set
- The Jaspers got off to a strong start in the fourth set, scoring five straight points to take a 5-0 lead over Niagara.
- Manhattan led 8-5, but a 5-0 run from the Purple Eagles put them in the lead, 9-8.
- The Jaspers led late in the set, 21-15. The Purple Eagles went on a 4-0 run to cut Manhattan’s lead to three points, 21-18, but the Jaspers hung on and won the set, 25-21, to tie the match, 2-2.
Fifth Set
- Niagara dominated the fifth set, taking a quick 5-1 lead over Manhattan after three straight kills from Jada Carrol.
- A 5-0 run from Niagara extended its lead, 11-3 and soon after, a 3-0 run, including two kills from Leitch and one from Mary Redl, gave the Purple Eagles a 10-point lead, 14-4.
- Niagara allowed the Jaspers two more points, but a kill from Cameron Maris iced the five-set victory for the Purple Eagles.
Eagle’s Eye On…
- Redl recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 kills and 14 digs. Her 16 kills are a career-high. Hetterscheidt also recorded 16 kills.
- Leitch had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs and Jessica Streuer recorded her 12th double-double with 13 digs and a team-high 33 assists.
- Carrol added 10 digs for the Purple Eagles and Emillie Wright added 15 digs.
- Maris had a team-high five total blocks.
