The Town of Tonawanda has issued a warning on social media to town residents about coyotes.

According to a post on the town’s official X account, “The Town has seen an uptick in coyotes in recent weeks. Heavy snow may have forced them out of their habitat. To scare them away, use an air horn, or whistle, or put some coins or nuts and bolts in a can and carry it with you.”

“If you are walking and see a coyote, blow the air horn, whistle, or shake the can. The noise will scare them away. Do not let small dogs off the leash in an area where the coyotes frequent. Coyotes are more afraid of people than people are afraid of them,” it said in a follow-up post.

Town Supervisor Joe Emminger said the cold weather is likely the reason more coyotes are present, adding that he’d be reviewing the situation.
