The Erie County Democratic committee unanimously endorsed state Senator Tim Kennedy to carry their torch in the 26th Congressional District seat soon to be vacated by Congressman Brian Higgins.

Kennedy got the nod for the nomination against former Grand Island Supervisor Nate McMurray, who called the endorsement meeting, “about as Democratic as the Democratic Republic of North Korea” on X (formerly Twitter) and vowed to stay in the race.

Buffalo mayor Byron Brown and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz had both both announced that they would not seek the seat, Poloncarz just being re-elected as Erie County Executive in November and Brown being re-elected as Buffalo Mayor in 2022.

Rep. Higgins will step down in early February to become President of Shea’s  Performing Arts Center, after which, Gov. Kathy Hochul will call for a special election to fill the seat. The 26th district includes Buffalo, Tonawanda, Lackawanna and part of Niagara County.
