Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 33-year-old Shamika A. Dean of Buffalo pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon before Buffalo City Court Judge Peter J. Savage, III to one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree (Class “A” misdemeanor). The defendant pleaded guilty to the highest charge on the morning her non-jury trial was set to begin.

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, the defendant was found in possession of stolen property, which included sneakers, fitted hats and shorts. The merchandise, valued at approximately $1,000, was reported stolen from a store on the 2800 block of Bailey Avenue, which was looted on December 25, 2022. The store was closed at the time of the incident due the blizzard and Christmas holiday.

Yesterday, Dean was sentenced to serve 100 hours of community service, which must be completed within the next six months. As a condition of the sentence, a portion of her community service hours must be served in the neighborhood where the store looting occurred. A final no-contact order of protection was issued on behalf of the store owner, which remains in effect for the next year.

DA Flynn commends the Buffalo Police Department Anti-Looting Task Force for their work in this investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mitchell C. Boughton of the Buffalo City Court Bureau.
