WASHINGTON, DC — Both of New York’s Senators voted tonight in favor of suspending the debt ceiling.

New York’s senior Senator Chuck Schumer and junior Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, voted with the majority to temporarily suspend the debt ceiling, allowing the federal government to make payments on debts the country has already incurred.

We passed this critical legislation to support American families, preserve vital programs, and avoid catastrophic default—and I look forward to President Biden signing it without delay.”

The bill will now be send the President Joe Biden’s desk, where he is expected to approve it.

Had the bill — and an identical House version, which passed yesterday — not passed prior to June 5, it is believed that the country would have defaulted on its loan payments.
