All four members of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Western New York voted in favor of suspending the United States debt limit tonight.

Democratic Congressman Brian Higgins, representing Buffalo, expressed his vote as “protecting Americans from catastrophic debt ceiling default,” while fellow Democrat Joseph Morelle, representing Rochester, did not issue a public statement on the vote.

Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy, representing Erie County (excluding Buffalo) and the Southern Tier, called the deal “far from perfect,” but said it is the “first step to curb Washington’s reckless spending.” And Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who represents half of Niagara County all the way to Watertown (minus Rochester), said it “reins in the Biden administration’s out-of-control spending.”

The legislation, “H. R. 3746,” imposes caps on discretionary funding, make other changes affecting spending and revenues, and raise the debt ceiling, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The legislation passed by a vote of 314 to 117, winning the majority vote in both parties.

The Senate is expected to take up the legislation on Thursday.
