ELBA — Two people are confirmed dead following a crash of a Mercy Fight Helicopter near Edgerton and Norton roads.

According to New York State Police Major Eugene Staniszewski, the helicopter may have hit power lines as it crashed.

“I don’t believe the lines caused the crash, but the aircraft may have struck the lines on the way down,” Maj. Staniszewski said.

According to officials, the helicopter — which was conducting a training exercise — had taken off from an airport approximately three miles from there crash site, where Mercy Flight has a hangar.

Many area roads are closed to traffic as the investigation continues. The NTSB, FAA and Mercy Flight are expected to continue to investigate the incident.
