Five Things to Know Before Canisius Hosts Albany
1. The Home Opener is a Banner Day
• Canisius opens the home portion of its 2018-19 schedule on Saturday when the team hosts Albany at 3:30 p.m., in the Koessler Athletic Center. Prior to tipoff, the Griffs will officially unveil their 2017-18 MAAC Regular Season Championship banner. Canisius won a share of the MAAC regular season title last season after the Blue and Gold set a new program record with 15 MAAC wins.
2. Opening Night Success
• On Nov. 13, Canisius opened the 115th season in program history with an 82-73 win over the defending Patriot League champion, Bucknell. That win was the Griffs’ first season-opening victory since 2014-15, and it marked the first time Canisius won the season opener on the road since the 2003-04 campaign when the Blue and Gold defeated Buffalo 60-58.
3. Molson Loves Openers
• Sophomore guard Takal Molson matched a career-high with 25 points in the road win over Bucknell Tuesday night, with 15 of those 25 points coming in the second half. Last year, in his first game as a Griff, the Buffalo native was good for 25 points in a road loss to Buffalo.
4. Isaiah Reese Keeps on Rolling
• Junior Isaiah Reese had 15 points and six rebounds in the win over Bucknell – his seventh-straight game scoring in double-figures, dating back to the end of last season. The 15-point performance by the Miami, Fla., native allowed him to move past 800 points scored in his career.
5. Some Old, Some New
• Canisius returned three starters from last season’s 21-win team – juniors Malik Johnson and Isaiah Reesealong with sophomore Takal Molson. Those three players each started all 33 games a season ago for the Blue and Gold. Up front, however, Canisius graduated two starters, allowing sophomores Scott Hitchon and Jalanni Whiteto earn the start on Tuesday when the team played at Bucknell. For Hitchon, who matched a career-high with eight points, it was his second start, while White started for the fourth time in his career. He had six points and three boards in the win.
