Game Recap
The Canisius women’s basketball team played their first ever three overtime game tonight in Olean, N.Y., against Little Three Rival St. Bonaventure (2-1), losing 100-94. The Golden Griffins (0-2) were led by junior D’Jhai Patterson-Ricks who scored 24 points, going 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range.
In all, four Griffs scored double-digits, including junior Shannon Conely who recorded 23 points in 48 minutes off the bench. Senior Sara Hinriksdottir recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Anndea Zeigler added 16 points for the Blue and Gold. Sophomore Danielle Sanderlin grabbed a game high 18 rebounds. As a team, Canisius shot 40.2 percent from the field on 33-of-82 shooting and 33.3 percent from three on 9-of-27 attempts from beyond the arc. Of the teams 94 points, 27 came from the bench.
A total of five St. Bonaventure players recoded double-digit points, led by Emily Calabrese, who posted 18 points while adding 10 rebounds for the double-double. She finished the night 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Danielle Migliore scored a team high 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting, four of which came from 3-point range. Bree Paulsen, Asianee Johnson and Dajah Logan scored 17, 13 and 12 each to help the Bonnies outlast the Griffs.
The Golden Griffins entered the second quarter with a six-point lead, 23-17, but St. Bonaventure rallied back to head into the locker room tied 37-37. Bona came out strong in the second half, extending their lead to as much as 13 points, and outscoring the Griffs 20-9 in the frame. The Blue and Gold then worked their way back in the fourth quarter, led by Conely who scored eight points in the quarter to help tie it 69-69 and force overtime.
St. Bonaventure’s Paulson hit a three to start the extra period but senior Maria Welch matched it on Canisius’ next possession to keep the game tied and neither team would get a bigger lead than three in each of the first two overtime periods. Heading into the third overtime the score was tied 88-88 with each team trading basket-for-basket until Bonaventure went on a 6-2 run starting at the 2:15 mark, capped off by a Dajah Logan layup in the paint to make the score 97-92 with 33 seconds left on the clock. Canisius would get as close as 97-94 before having to foul Bonaventure, who added three from the line to cap the victory.

“We let down in stretches of the second quarter with our energy level and with things we can control like rebounding, that let them back in the game. I give the players a lot of credit, seven quarters on the road on a Tuesday night, with a new coach, a new system, they never quit, they battled. There is still a lot we have to get better at, but I admire their courage, they played together tonight and that was one of our goals going in.”
